Where It Began — Why It Still Matters
The Works is a private men’s club in Indianapolis that has served the gay community for decades. Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, it was created as a space built by and for gay men — independent, unapologetic, and shaped by the people who use it.
From the beginning, The Works was never meant to be a bar, a trend, or a spectacle. It was established as a place where privacy mattered, community mattered, and gay men could exist on their own terms.
While the club has evolved over time, its purpose has remained consistent: to provide a dedicated, members-only environment rooted in trust, discretion, and continuity. The Works isn’t trying to be everything — it exists for a specific community, and it always has.
Discretion, respect, and personal boundaries are expected throughout the club.

About Stan Berg
The Works was founded in 1977 by Stan Berg, a gay rights activist, business owner, and publisher who played a significant role in Indianapolis’s LGBTQ+ history.
In addition to opening The Body Works as a 24-hour private club for men, Berg founded The Works newspaper — later New Works News — which provided local news, community information, and critical health resources during the HIV/AIDS crisis.
Berg was also a cofounder of the Indianapolis Gay/Lesbian Coalition and an outspoken advocate for visibility, civil rights, and community education. His work helped shape both the physical space of The Works and the broader cultural landscape surrounding it.
A New Chapter For
A Gay Icon
The Works is now under new ownership with full-time, on-site management focused on care, consistency, and long-term investment. This new chapter prioritizes day-to-day attention and thoughtful improvements throughout the space — without losing the character that has always defined the club.
Recent updates include refreshed interiors, upgraded systems, and ongoing enhancements designed to improve comfort, cleanliness, and reliability. The goal isn’t to reinvent The Works, but to strengthen it and ensure it continues to serve its community well into the future.
Everyone Belongs Here
The Works is a private men’s club and sauna rooted in the LGBTQ+ community, and once you’re here, you’re welcome exactly as you are. There is no single way to look, act, or belong at The Works. Men of all ages, body types, backgrounds, identities, and experiences share the space together—without hierarchy, judgment, or expectation.
Whether you arrive confident or curious, experienced or exploring, the club is built on mutual respect and the understanding that everyone deserves a place where they don’t have to measure up to belong.
Come as you are. Stay as long as you like.
A Space Shaped by the People Inside It
The Works has never been just a building. Over time, it’s become a place where people leave their mark — sometimes thoughtful, sometimes funny, sometimes raw. The atmosphere reflects the energy of the men who move through it, and that presence is part of what defines the space.
We don’t try to over-polish every detail or script every interaction. The club is intentionally allowed to feel lived-in and unfiltered. Alongside sauna and lounge areas, The Works includes dark areas and play areas that exist as part of the experience — not hidden or advertised, but part of the shared understanding among the men who come here.
That honesty is part of what makes The Works different. It’s real. It’s unapologetic. And it offers clarity — so men don’t have to guess whether this is the kind of place they’re looking for.
What to Expect Inside
The Works is a private men’s club and sauna designed for adults who understand the environment they’re entering. Inside, you’ll find sauna and steam areas, lounge spaces, private rooms, and designated dark and play areas that are part of the club’s layout and culture. These spaces exist openly and without pretense, forming a shared understanding among the men who use them.
Attire throughout the club is minimal, with towels or underwear being the norm. Some men come to relax, some come to socialize, some come to explore — and many do a mix of all three. There is no single way to experience The Works, and participation is always a personal choice.
The atmosphere is respectful and self-directed. Boundaries matter, consent is assumed, and men are free to engage, observe, or simply be present at their own pace. Whether it’s your first visit or one of many, the environment is designed so you never have to guess what kind of space you’re in — or whether you belong there.
